Date: 14/10/2011

The Greater Building Society has renewed its major sponsorship of the Lake Macquarie Amateur Championships for another two years.

The 2012 Greater Building Society Women’s Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship will be played from Tuesday January 10 to Friday January 13 at Belmont Golf Club. The 2012 Greater Building Society Men’s Lake Macquarie Amateur Championship will be played at the same course from Thursday January 26 to Sunday January 29.

Belmont Golf Club general manager Greg Pearce said that the funding will allow the club to continue one of the most prestigious amateur golf tournaments in the Hunter and Australia.

Mr Pearce said the Greater Building Society Lake Macquarie Amateur Open is now ranked in the Top 30 amateur golf tournaments in the world by ameateurgolf.com.
“This year looks like being one of the biggest tournaments ever as we are receiving very strong international interest,” Mr Pearce said.

Greater head of strategic development Chris Hodgins said the Greater had supported the men’s tournament for 16 years and the women’s event for seven.
Mr Hodgins said the Greater is proud to be able to continue its support to stage this important Hunter golf tournament and to encourage the development of amateur golf.

“I encourage Hunter people to come and enjoy some fantastic golf at next year’s Greater Building Society championships,” Mr Hodgins said.
This year’s winner of the men’s tournament was Brady Watt while Breanna Elliott took out the women’s event.

The Greater is the major sponsor of the Greater Building Society Shortland Waters Pro Am on October 27, 2011. Australian Open winner, Craig Parry, will one of 70 professional golfers from around Australia teeing up at the event. This is the first Pro Am to be held at the golf club for many years.
