Greater future for Gold Coast athletes

Date: 26/02/2010

The Greater Building Society is supporting local athletes, coaches and sporting administrators via a new sponsorship deal with the Gold Coast Academy of Sport.

This month the Academy held a special function at Q1 to welcome the Greater Building Society as a major sponsor for 2010. The Greater is also the preferred financial institution for the Academy’s banking requirements.

The Greater’s head of marketing John Dwyer said that the Greater was a big supporter of regional sports development. The Greater is also a supporter of the Hunter and Central Coast academies of sport in NSW. It has also been a supporter of the Queensland PGA.

Mr Dwyer said that because the Greater served its members, rather than shareholders, it made a priority of supporting local community and sporting organisations in the areas in which it operates.

“We are looking forward to witnessing the further development of some of the region's most promising athletes through the growing number of sports development programs that the Academy is supporting,” Mr Dwyer said.

"The Gold Coast Academy of Sport is long overdue and we think it is important to have local support for local athletes in growing regional areas," he said.

Gold Coast Academy of Sport managing director Ian Robilliard and executive officer Robert Thompson said they were extremely appreciative of the support being offered by the Greater Building Society for the fledgling Academy.

“The Greater’s support will help us to bring together the region's motivated athletes in a variety of locally based high performance and educational training programs,” Mr Robilliard said.

"As a regionally based organisation, the Greater understands the importance of regional development,” he said.

The Gold Coast Academy of Sport was established in August 2009. It is modeled on the successful NSW Central Coast Academy of Sport.

The Greater Building Society has seven branches on the Gold Coast. It was also a major supporter of last year’s Gold Coast Show.
