Greater provides $50,000 for Armidale disability accommodation

Date: 14 October 2011

The Greater Building Society has provided $50,000 to a new accommodation facility in Armidale for people with a disability.

Walker House, which is managed by The Ascent Group, was officially opened by NSW Minister for Disability Services, Andrew Constance, on September 27, 2011.

The purpose built facility provides accommodation for five residents with complex support needs.

CEO Don Magin said the funding has come from $1.5 million the Greater pledged to contribute to the New England North West Region over 15 years following its merger with Armidale based ABS Building Society in May this year.

“ABS Building Society was a long-term supporter of The Ascent Group so it was fitting that it was the first organisation to receive funding support,” Mr Magin said.

“The Greater believes in giving back to the communities in which we operate,” he said.

The Ascent Group has played a significant role in the provision of services for people with disabilities in Armidale and the New England region for 56 years.

The funding for the New England North West comes directly from the Greater Building Society rather than the newly formed Greater Charitable Foundation.

The Greater has also provided the Foundation with one million dollars for its inaugural funding round for projects that improve the lives of families and communities in NSW and the Gold Coast. Successful projects will be announced in December.
