The ongoing development of rugby in the Hunter has been given a welcome boost today by the Greater Building Society.

The Greater has today signed a two year deal with Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union (NHRU) to be the naming rights sponsor for the 2010 and 2011 seasons.

NHRU president Phil Payne said the Greater’s support will benefit local rugby clubs, fans and the development of the sport in the region.

“The support from the Greater is very welcome because we struggled without a major naming rights sponsor last year,” Mr Payne said.

“With our regional administration now fully funded we will not have to levy local rugby clubs,” he said

“The funding will allow Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union to move forward with certainty and focus on key projects like the redevelopment of the No. 2 Sportsground as the new home of Hunter rugby.

Greater Building Society chief executive officer Don Magin said the Greater tries to support local sporting and community organisations in the area in which it operates.

“We help grass roots sports that don’t always attract funding from other organisations,” Mr Magin said.

“Sport plays an important part in any region and it is important to many of our members,” he said.

NHRU consists of 22 clubs with three divisions as well as numerous junior sides and a women's competition.

The Hunter based Greater Building Society is one of Australia’s largest building societies with 30 of its 66 branches located in the Hunter. The Greater also supports the Hunter and Central Coast academies of sport and the Newcastle and District Bowls Association.
