Scam Alert - Fee Refund Scam

Date: 29/11/2010

Greater Building Society is continually on the look out for cyber-crime issues that may affect our members.  One such scam currently being observed in Australia is the Fee Refund Scam.

How it works:

Typically a victim will receive an unsolicited phone call or email stating they are entitled to a fee or over-payment refund.  The callers are usually quite forceful and often speak with an accent, claiming they are from the institutions “head office”.

The caller will then ask the victim to supply some personal identification (such as a date of birth and license number) and ask for their credit card number so the “refund” can be processed directly to the card.

The callers will then take the card details and the personal information they have received, assume the victims identity and process unauthorised transactions on that card.

How to protect yourself:

NO genuine financial institution will contact a member in this way.  If you receive a call or an email that fits the above description, hang up the phone or delete the message immediately and contact Greater Building Society’s Fraud Prevention section on 1300 653 679 to report the activity.
