Helping our Community

Greater Sponsorship - Helping our Community

At the Greater we are proud to support a range of community and sporting organisations and events - from vital medical research to front line services that give a helping hand to those in need.

On behalf of members we like to support causes or organisations that are important to the community but that don't always receive major attention - like child abuse.

We support grass roots organisations that are supporting our members to have fun as well as athletes to be best they can be.

MAYUMARRI TRUST

Helping victims of child abuse to heal

The Greater this year more than doubled its contribution to the nations only private healing centre for victims of child abuse. The partnership agreement with Mayumarri was renewed for another two years and the annual financial contribution increased from $20,000 to $50,000. Mayumarri is reliant on business support and with increasing costs and growing demand for services it did not have the funds to keep all services going.

Since Mayumarri began in 1999, more than 1,700 men, women and children have attended healing weeks at the centres adult retreat and Kids Kamp. The Greater also provides in kind staff support in areas such as business administration and IT. Staff also carry out their own fundraising and have undertaken voluntary work at the centre. Reports show that in Australia one in four girls and one in seven boys are sexually abused before the age of 16.

Donations to Mayumarri can be made at any Greater branch.

WESLEY LIFEFORCE

Preventing suicide in rural and regional Australia

The Greater's long standing support of the work of Wesley Mission continued this year as a major sponsor of its suicide prevention program. Lifeforce aims to educate, empower and resource Australian communities to be aware of the issues of suicide.

Part of the program includes free community workshops to provide training on how to care for people who may be considering suicide. Participants receive expert advice on identifying people at risk, developing skills in approaching and listening to them, and learning about intervention strategies in the community.

The Greater sponsored ten workshops in regional NSW in 2005/06 at a total cost of $25,000. Participants also receive a 'Community Information Card' detailing local 24-hour crisis numbers, local support services and community support numbers. These cards are printed by the Greater.

SAMARITANS

Supporting those caring for people

The Greater continues to support the outstanding work carried out by the Samaritans by acting as a collection agency for its Christmas and Winter appeals. The Greater also prints a range of Samaritan's materials valued at approximately $40,000 this year.

The Samaritans Foundation is the welfare agency of the Anglican Diocese of Newcastle. It is one of Australia's largest regional welfare organisations providing more than 118 services to about 60,000 people annually in the Hunter Valley, Manning and Central Coast regions.

These services are provided in the areas of children, youth, family, community development, disability, employment, health promotion, recycling of donated clothing and emergency relief services. Other programs also include disaster relief coordination, social policy research and special joint initiative projects including one to combat unemployment - The Two Bishops Trust.

HMRI

Helping to fund research for our future

For six years the Greater has supported groundbreaking research being undertaken by Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) researcher Dr Darren Schafren and other team members to successfully develop anti-cancer treatments using viruses. Their laboratory investigations have shown that the common cold virus can be used to kill malignant melanoma cells. This year the Greater concluded its funding of an extension of this research into the treatment of various other cancers, including breast, colorectal, prostate and ovarian cancer.

The Greater will continue to support the work of HMRI in a new project next year.
