More bang for your travel buck

Maybe you put off travelling when you were younger because it was too expensive, maybe you’re waiting for retirement or to finish Uni, or maybe starting a young family has sidelined your travel dreams.

It’s completely understandable. Travel in whatever form is a luxury – everybody knows this.

But just because you’re on a budget doesn’t mean you have to give up on the notion of leaving the everyday behind and seeing a bit more of this world we live in.

I’ve put together my top tips for making the most of your travel dollar and getting the best experience possible for your budget.

Planning makes perfect

Once you’ve picked your destination, incorporate your budget planning into the mix of laying out your itinerary. The two are joined at the hip – once you know where you’d like to stay and what you’d like to do, it’s easy to calculate your total needed and set out your savings plan to reach your goal.

Make use of the tools available to you online so you don’t lose sight of the light at the end of the tunnel. Our Savings Goal Calculator is great at keeping you on track so you can focus on the countdown to departure.

Deals, glorious online deals

Once upon a time, travellers were beholden to travel agents to access information from around the world when it comes to planning their trip and getting the best value for money. How times have changed! While it’s true travel agents will use their travel knowledge to look for great value, the explosion of the travel industry online means that travellers are now able to get insider information from travel advice sites like TripAdvisor and others on the reality of each location. Plus, online travel sites frequently offer special deals that only apply online. Staying across these sites could save you serious money.

Lock it in your pocket

If you prefer not to carry cash, a Travel Money Card might just be perfect for you. The great thing about these cards is the ability to lock in an exchange rate at the time you load money onto the card. This means you have the ability to wait until currency fluctuations are to your advantage, lock in a set amount, and know exactly how much you have to spend while away. The Greater offers the Multi Currency Cash Passport.

Keep track wherever you are

Once you get on the road, it can be easy to leave your world behind. It’s important to stay on track with your spending however, to make sure you don’t bring home any unwanted financial souvenirs. The Greater’s Internet Banking and Mobile App is perfect for travellers, giving you a range of functionality to let you manage your money anywhere, anytime. (Top Tip – be careful when overseas to only use the Mobile App when connected to WiFi – turn your roaming data off to avoid hefty data fees on your next bill).

It’s important to remember that your travel dreams don’t have to be moved around or put off because of the once high cost of travel. The tourism industry in most first world countries has evolved now to the point where every budget is accommodated for.
