Smart, simple ways to avoid fees

You know the feeling – whether you’re scouring your statement or checking your accounts online, the moment you see those fee deductions, the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.

The unfortunate thing is that most of us aren’t aware just how easy it is to avoid the majority of fees we’re currently paying.

At The Greater, we live and work alongside our customers, and we share their frustrations and concerns, so in the interest of providing a Greater way of banking, here are my simple tips to giving fees the slip.

Get the right account for you

The easiest place to start is to take a look at your current bank account and how you use it. Is it the best option for what you need? If you still use cash more than card, and want a simple account, our Access Account is probably the best way to go. If you use your card heavily, and want an account to deposit your salary into, an Ultimate Access could be right up your alley. For a full comparison of our Everyday Accounts, click here

Use Greater ATMs when you can

When you’re out and about and need cash in a hurry, it can be easy to just pop by the nearest ATM, but this can lead to unwanted fees being imposed by the financial institution who owns the ATM. An easy way to find a Greater ATM is by using our handy ATM Locator on our website – it works on any mobile or tablet device, and use your location to pinpoint the nearest fee-friendly ATM.

Bank online or on your mobile

An easy way to minimise transaction fees is to head online on your desktop PC or mobile to do your banking. The Greater offers convenient, easy to use Internet Banking, Mobile Banking and our recently upgraded Mobile App to help you make over-the-counter a thing of the past and save you money. (Some fees apply for certain transactions)

Pay and withdraw for free at the checkout

If you’ve just ducked to the shops and are using your card to pick up some groceries, but know that you’ll need cash later on, it’s free to withdraw cash at the EFTPOS terminal with your transaction. Saves money and more convenient than looking for an ATM – this is something more of us should keep in mind!

Avoid a range of fees with SMS and Email Alerts

When it gets close to payday and you forget your insurance is due to be debited from your account, you could just kick yourself, right? Well, The Greater has a range of free SMS and Email Alerts on a number of accounts which can help you avoid excess fees by keeping you notified of activity on your account. What’s more, they’re easy to set up through Internet Banking! Check them out here.

Conduct fee reviews anytime

If you feel like examining your accounts more closely to see if you’re paying too much in fees, don’t wait for your next quarterly statement. By signing up to Internet Banking you can view account records when it suits you. Our Internet Banking also lets you review past statements, so you can be as thorough as you like.
