Greater urges others to get behind Salvos for Red Shield Appeal

Staff from the Greater Building Society will join more than 400 Newcastle and Hunter businesses men and women to show their support for The Salvation Army this Friday 16 May at the Hunter Red Shield Appeal Official Opening at Wests, New Lambton.

The Greater is again sponsoring the luncheon along with a number of other leading Hunter organisations including:

  • Bloomfield
  • Wests Group Australia
  • nib
  • Port Waratah Coal Services
  • Newcastle Port Corporation
  • Glencore.

More than 55,000 people relied on Salvation Army services last year in Newcastle alone and even more will require help this year with ongoing social issues like domestic violence, food affordability and unemployment rates continuing to affect the community.

The Red Shield Appeal is The Salvation Army’s annual fundraising drive. In the Hunter region the goal is to raise $2 million to assist provide vital local social services that cost over $12 million annually. Last year’s business luncheon raised more than $100,00 towards the Appeal.

The Greater is also supporting the Appeal with CEO Don Magin leading a team of doorknockers for the weekend door knock on May 24-25. The Greater is also participating in Salvos Red Threads Day where staff will dress in red and donate a gold coin to the Appeal on May 23.
