Greater staff help Captain Starlight bring joy to sick kids

Greater Building Society Casino branch customer service officer Chris Becker will have her first experience of helping Captain Starlight to help put a smile on the faces of sick local children at Lismore Base Hospital today.

Ms Becker is joining Captain Starlight as part of the Greater Charitable Foundation’s support for Starlight Children’s Foundation. In addition to providing funding for the Captain Starlight program, the Greater Charitable Foundation arranges for The Greater’s staff to volunteer with captains.

The mother of three has a nephew that has had spent significant time in hospital so she knows how tough it is for families when a child is in hospital.

“I jumped at the chance to get involved to support local kids and their families that are having to spend time in hospital,” Ms Becker said.

The Foundation’s funding of $515,000 dollars has allowed Captain Starlight to regularly visit Lismore Hospital as well as five other regional NSW hospitals and three Gold Coast hospitals since the start of 2012. Captain Starlight has also started occasional visits to Tweed Hospital. Tweed Heads branch staff member Hilary Clark visited that hospital with Captain Starlight today (September 9). Staff from The Greater’s Lismore and Ballina branches have also volunteered at Lismore Hospital.

The Greater Charitable Foundation was established by Greater Building Society in 2011. Funded out of profits from the building society, it has already allocated more than $4 million to support 11 charity partners. Funding for Starlight also supports its Wishgranting programs that grant a wish to a seriously ill child.

“As The Greater is owned by our customers, not shareholders, we put our profits back into support for the local community,” Ms Becker said.
