Greater Bank staff give Harry’s House a helping hand

Greater Bank staff have given Harry’s House some much needed TLC in an effort to make the family retreat a more comfortable place to stay for those who find themselves in need of its accommodation over the coming months.

Located on the Stockton peninsula between the harbour and beach, Harry’s House provides a ‘home away from home’ for families of any child undergoing cancer treatment in the Hunter, as well as those grieving the loss of their child to cancer within the past two years.

A group of Greater Bank employees volunteered their time at the house this week to run a working bee at the house, cleaning and undertaking some general repairs.

Samantha and David Meyn established Harry’s House in 2012, following the passing of their seven-year-old son who was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour. During his treatment, they saw first-hand the struggles many endured simply keeping their family together during such a traumatic time.

Greater Charitable Foundation provided $100,000 in funding to the Harry Meyn Foundation in 2016 to support Harry’s House for two years. According to Samantha, the additional support from Greater Bank employees has come as a wonderful surprise for the families.

“Those that visit us are going through a tough time, so we want to do all we can to make sure they are welcomed into a warm and aesthetically pleasing environment.

“The work carried out by the Greater Bank volunteers has made a huge impact on the presentation of our family retreat and will no doubt make our guests feel a lot more comfortable during their stay,” Samantha said.

“We rely heavily on funding to stay operational and provide the service we do. Thanks to the Greater Bank employee working-bee we can now redirect some funds from general maintenance to replenishing supplies and other essential costs associated with managing the house.”

Greater Charitable Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Anne Long, emphasised the important role Harry’s House plays in the community and the satisfaction Greater Bank employees have gained from contributing to this crucial service.

“Our recent staff-driven volunteering effort at Harry’s House has been rewarding for everyone involved. The charity will now be able to spend their finite resources on other important operational expenses to ensure each family's stay is effortless and relaxing, allowing for valuable family time together.”

“It’s so pleasing to see our employees contributing to the work of our not-for-profit partners. Last year alone, more than 200 Greater Bank employees volunteered over 1000 hours to assist Greater Charitable Foundation’s charity partners with a variety of activities. This is something our organisation is passionate about.”

Since Harry’s House opened in 2012, more that 400 families have benefited from the respite retreat, staying anywhere from one to six weeks.
