What, Why, How
Greater Charitable Foundation funding is supporting a Hunter/Central Coast-based Financial Counsellor for people affected by cancer experiencing financial hardship. This program aims to alleviate the financial stress of cancer on patients and their families by connecting them with a qualified Financial Counsellor who can provide free information, support and advocacy to reduce their financial burden.
This year, over 6,100 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in the Hunter/Central Coast region alone. Prior to our funding, the Financial Counselling Program only offered face-to-face financial counselling in Metropolitan Sydney and Greater Western Sydney. Other regions across NSW, including Hunter/Central Coast, were serviced only through telephone financial counselling.
Early identification of financial pressure and access to financial counselling can help prevent unnecessary burden on people affected by cancer who are experiencing financial stress. The Cancer Council NSW Financial Counsellor will provide cancer patients and carers with free information, support and advocacy to help them better manage complex financial issues that arise throughout their cancer journey.
Impact of Financial Counselling Program
A cancer diagnosis can cost up to $149,400. Financial stress is reported by around one-quarter of people diagnosed with cancer and more than one-third of carers. In the last financial year, Cancer Council NSW supported 2,440 cancer patients experiencing financial hardship.
Beneficiaries of financial counselling report positive outcomes, including a reduction in financial burden, better access to hardship programs and improved mental and emotional health.
