Funding for the Harry Meyn Foundation is supporting the Harry's House Respite Program to assist Hunter-based families affected by childhood cancer. The program enables respite or short term accommodation for families, to help strengthen their family bond and assist them through a stressful and emotionally challenging time.

Cancer has been called a family disease (PDQ Supportive and Palliative Care Editorial Board, 2015) having variable effects not only on the child being treated for cancer but on the child's parents and siblings as well. Evidence states that risk factors for parental and family unit distress, upon the diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancer on a family member, have been found to include lack of perceived social support and concern about finances (Vrijmoet-Wiersma, van Klink, Kolk, Koopman, Ball & Egeler, 2008). Statistics from Hunter New England Health Service indicate that approximately 120 to 150 children per year are referred to oncology services in Newcastle.

The Harry's House Respite Program enables emotional and financial support to families in the form of short term or respite accommodation, provided at no cost to the family. Currently, there is a local shortage of zero to low cost accommodation for families who must travel away from home for their child to receive treatment. The Harry Meyn Foundation work hard to ensure that each family's stay is effortless and relaxing, allowing for valuable family time together.

Impact of Harry's House Retreat

Harry’s House retreats are available to families that have a child living with cancer and to families grieving the loss of their child to cancer.

Our funding will ensure more than 200 families affected by childhood cancer will have the opportunity to have access to respite accommodation services.
