What, Why, How
Our funding has enabled the McGrath Foundation to fund a second Breast Care Nurse based in Newcastle. McGrath Breast Care Nurses are help improve outcomes for people diagnosed with breast cancer by acting as patient advocates, coordinating care, and ensuring their physical, psychological and emotional needs are met.
This year over 850 individuals will be diagnosed with breast cancer in the Hunter New England and Central Coast region and over 1,000 people will require support and care. McGrath Breast Care Nurses provide invaluable physical, psychological and emotional support to families from diagnosis and throughout treatment.
The support of a Breast Care Nurse is given to those who need it free of charge and can be accessed through self-referral.
Since its inception in 2005, the McGrath Foundation has supported over 64,000 families experiencing breast cancer from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.
Over the last 5 years alone, they have grown the McGrath Breast Care Nurse workforce by 38%.
