Our funding has enabled Starlight Children's Foundation to expand the provision of much needed support to seriously ill children and their families in regional NSW and South East Queensland. Support to families living in or hospitalised in these areas will be provided through two core programs: Starlight Connection Ward visits and in-hospital programs at the John Hunter Children's Hospital (Newcastle) Starlight Express Room. Funding is also supporting the creation of Livewire in-hospital workshops and the production of a nationwide Livewire Zine Magazine, designed exclusively for teenagers experiencing a serious illness.
Every minute of every day, a child is admitted to hospital in Australia. Living with a serious illness or disability can often deny children normal opportunities and experiences that are essential to their overall health and wellbeing. Starlight provides a level of support that is integral to the total care of these seriously ill children and offers them a chance to share in some of these experiences, reminding them what it is like to be a child again.
Our funding enables Starlight to deliver in-hospital programs at the Starlight Express Room at John Hunter Hospital (Newcastle) and is supporting the Starlight Connection Program, which brings Captain Starlight to regional hospitals where hospitalised children often have little or no access to specialised distraction programs. New regular programs have been established at hospitals in Maitland, Gosford, Armidale, Tamworth, Lismore, Gold Coast and Taree. Funding has also been allocated to support Livewire in Hospital workshops, helping to connect seriously ill adolescents through creativity, entertainment and a supportive environment. Funds have also been given for the production of 'Livewire Zine', the Livewire Program magazine that is produced four times a year with content created by the young people and distributed nationally to more than 3,500 teenagers in hospital.
Foundation funding from 2012 to 2015 also helped Starlight grant 40 wishes to seriously ill children and young people within NSW regional Queensland. Since 2012, the partnership between Starlight and the Foundation has enabled more than 20,000 children and their families to access the Captain Starlight program. Starlight recently undertook a Social Return on Investment analysis of the Starlight Express Rooms.
The Livewire program is another important element for Starlight, allowing them to respond to the significant needs of seriously ill teenagers. Livewire was developed in partnership with leading Australian health professionals to address the growing numbers of teens living with illness and disability.

"Starlight is a very good example of what miracles are all about. Because of the facilities Starlight provide, our children actually look forward to visiting the hospital for treatment."
