Students in Eugowra are happily completing their homework thanks to St Joseph's Catholic Primary School’s Homework Club which has been named a recent winner in the Greater Bank Central West Community Funding Program.
Facilitated by the school’s Parents and Friends Association (P&F), the dedicated group of volunteers host the Homework Club after school four days a week and provide academic support as well as physical activities, games, socialising, and afternoon tea.
The program was developed in response to the 2022 floods to help families get back on their feet while juggling work commitments and rebuilding their homes and has proven to be indispensable with many local parents travelling for work commitments.
P&F representative Kate Langfield said the program has given students a more positive outlook on their homework.
“We are incredibly proud of our Homework Club Program. Along with academic support, it also includes a balanced mix of play and social activities, contributing to their overall well-being,” Kate said.
“Participation has been remarkable, we have between 15-24 students attending each afternoon, and they feel a sense of belonging to their community and a more positive attitude towards homework.”
Greater Bank Regional Manager Greg Creagan said the customer-owned organisation is proud to support the program which is bringing joy to students, parents and teachers alike.
“Homework is so important for students’ learning and development, but with families busier than ever it can be tricky to find the time for it, so we are delighted to support St Joseph’s Primary School’s Homework Club,” Greg said.
“Not only is the Club making sure children are supported with their homework, but they’ve also made it something to look forward to – I’m sure the parents and teachers are thrilled!”
Kate said the funding will be invested into resources for students.
“We are so grateful to Greater Bank for this generous contribution towards our Homework Club. This funding will allow us to continue to provide this service by supporting a permanent staff position, and the purchase of educational resources for our students,” Kate said.
“We are dedicated to continuing this successful program for local students and families so we are always on the lookout for funding opportunities as our club is wholly supported by external funding and grant opportunities.”
The Homework Club is one of 156 local organisations to receive funding through the Greater Bank Central West Community Funding Program since August 2021.
The entrants for the March round of the Central West Community Funding Program, where there’s another $3,000 up for grabs, are Country Hope, Third Bathurst Scouts Group, and Orange High School Aboriginal Program.
