Avoiding renovating mistakes

Make the right preparations

We live in a quick-fix world, but renovations rarely work that way. Relying on a quick tutorial and little planning can quickly lead to costly mistakes.

No matter the size of your project, proper planning is essential. Set a clear plan, establish your budget, and agree on expectations with any contractors or project managers before work begins.

Fail to prepare? Prepare to fail.

Meet issues head on

Once you get started, it’s normal to run into a few challenges. Whether you’re managing multiple suppliers and contractors or updating an older home with ageing plumbing and wiring.

The key is to address issues early. Ignoring them or putting them off can quickly lead to delays and unexpected costs.

Be proactive. By fixing small problems early, you’ll help keep your project on track and your budget under control.

  1. Identify
Take the time to identify the root cause of your problem.
  2. Strategise
Meet with your contractors and/or project managers and work together to find out how best to resolve the issue.
  3. Implement and review
Put your solution into practice and re-assess your project timeline and budget

Choose the right approach

Choosing who does what on your renovation is key to keeping your project on track. While it can be tempting to take on more yourself, it’s important to be realistic about your skills and where you can add the most value.

DIY where it makes sense

If you’re confident and willing to learn, there’s nothing wrong with getting involved in simpler tasks like painting, sanding or demolition. These can be cost-effective and rewarding to tackle yourself.

However, more specialised work often requires a higher level of skill and precision.

Use licensed trades where it counts

Some jobs are not only complex but can also be dangerous or illegal without the proper qualifications. Electrical work, plumbing and asbestos removal should always be left to licensed professionals.

When hiring trades, compare quotes and look for recommendations to ensure you’re working with someone reputable.

Don't cut corners

Your initial planning should give you a clear idea of what your renovation will cost, but sticking to a budget doesn’t mean compromising on quality or your vision.

With the right approach (and the right support), you can achieve the result you’re after without cutting corners.

Review your insurance policy

It’s something we see all too often.

You’ve put time, effort and care into improving your home, so make sure it’s protected properly.
