The Greater Newcastle Co-operative Permanent Building and Investment Society was formed. The society has changed its name over the years and is now known as Greater Bank to reflect our reach beyond Newcastle, and to better reflect the products and services we provide. Greater Bank now serves over 270,000 customers across NSW and South East QLD.
Greater Bank opens its first branch outside the Hunter, expanding to the Central Coast of NSW with a branch in Gosford.
Greater Bank decides to drop “Newcastle” from its name, as the company now operates in a region stretching from Illawarra to the North Coast of NSW.
Once we knew the entire world was safe from the Y2K bug, we launched our fledgling Online Banking platform in 2001. From simple beginnings, our Online Banking has grown to service the needs of over 270,000 registered customers, with over 4.7 million logins each month.
Greater Bank receives international attention as comedian Jerry Seinfeld is engaged to appear in the company’s promotional campaigns. The comedian, who rarely appears in advertising, helps raise awareness of Greater Bank to new heights over the next three years.
As the smartphone began to embed itself in our lives, we responded to the needs of our customers by launching our Mobile Banking App for Apple devices in 2011, followed by an Android version in 2012. Our App has become the platform of choice for our customers - it's been downloaded over 300,000 times, and accounts for almost 90% of all online transactions completed by our customers monthly.
The Greater Charitable Foundation is formed to support charities and make a long term difference to families and communities. Thus far The Foundation has allocated close to $9 million to charities, and Greater Bank staff regularly volunteer to support the fantastic work of the Foundation’s partners.
After decades trading as Greater Building Society, we decided in 2016 to change our name, but not our nature. Becoming Greater Bank, we treated ourselves to a fresh new look, while maintaining our customer-owned roots, and customer-first attitude that has seen us help generations of customers reach their financial goals.
2018 was a big year for us. After February saw us named Bank of the Year for the second consecutive year in the National Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards, we were awarded Money Magazine Home Lender of the Year Award!
In our 75th year, we're proudly celebrating how much we've helped the communities we call home grow. We're in a stronger financial position than ever, and we're continuing to improve so we can serve the needs of our customers for generations to come.
