Preserving history for greater tourism future

Eltham Community Foundation 704x396.jpgThe goal of turning a 19th century railway cottage into a museum is one step closer for Eltham Community Foundation, thanks to Greater Bank’s #GreaterNorthernRivers Community Funding Program.

Winning the program’s May round public vote sees Eltham Community Foundation receive $2,000, with East Lismore Community Preschool and Tintenbar East Ballina Football Club each receiving $500 as the monthly runners up.

The Eltham Community Foundation is a non-profit charitable group formed in 2006 to save the historic town’s railway cottage, which is on the planned route of Northern Rivers Rail Trail, the first stage of which opened earlier this year.

Eltham Community Foundation Treasurer, Terry Hinrichsen, said the project aims to preserve local history.

“You only get one chance to save historic buildings like our railway cottage, because once it’s gone, it’s gone,” Terry said.

“The timber cottage was built in 1894 and while it’s in relatively good condition, it does need quite a bit of work to convert it into a museum, while ensuring it’s safe and secure enough for visitors to store the old photos and relics from bygone eras.

“We raise money in any way we can think of, including community film nights, raffles and barbecues, so we’re very appreciative of this contribution to our cause from Greater Bank.”

Greater Northern Rivers Regional Sales Manager, Scott McCluskey, said preserving local history is very important.

“The Northern Rivers Rail Trail is shaping up to be a terrific drawcard for tourism in the region, enabling visitors to take the road less travelled by bike or on foot,” Scott said.

“Having a variety of experiences at different destinations will add to the offering, encouraging people to stay longer and spend more, boosting the visitor economy, which is good news for local businesses and jobs.

“That’s why we’re delighted to support the Eltham Community Foundation in their efforts.”

The June round sees a further $3,000 on offer and our monthly nominees are: Ballina United Hospital Auxiliary, Bexhill Quarry Parklands Association and Casino Pony Club.

The public vote is open at greater.com.au/greaternorthernrivers from 9.00am Monday June 5 until 5.00pm Wednesday June 28, 2023.
