Emily Van Egmond thrills future football superstars at Greater Bank coaching clinic

Some 200 football fanatics received expert coaching from one of Australia’s best midfielders at No.2 Sportsground on Tuesday, with Matildas star Emily van Egmond delighting the youngsters at the Greater Bank Jets:PLAY clinic.

The appearance comes off a captivating FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign on home soil, a successful season with San Diego Wave FC and a nailbiting weekend match with the Newcastle Jets, following van Egmond’s signing to a four-game guest appearance with the local outfit.

The entire Newcastle Jets A-League Women’s squad was on hand for the two-hour free clinic, which was an afternoon of Christmas-themed fun.

Boys and girls aged 5 to 13 not only received coaching from Jets players, there was also face painting, photos, autographs and a special visit from Santa.IMG_4789.jpg

Following the clinic, hungry football fans were treated to a sausage sandwich and some Christmas treats, then invited to watch the A-League Women's squad train.

Van Egmond said that giving back to young players was an important part of her hometown stint.

“I’ve had an amazing year with the Matildas and San Diego Wave, so it’s fantastic to be able to share my experience with these kids,” van Egmond said.

“I love coming home to the Jets and I used to be just like these kids, so clinics like this always bring back fond memories for me.

“Newcastle has given so much to me and my football career, so I will jump at any chance I get to give back and inspire some future Matildas and Socceroos.”

Greater Bank Chief Distribution Officer Emma Brokate said that as a customer-owned organisation, supporting the Newcastle Jets was about more than the teams’ performance on game day.

“Providing opportunities for kids to meet and learn from their heroes is a key focus of the Jets:PLAY program,” Ms Brokate said.

“Obviously this particular clinic was a little different, with a Hunter legend like Emily appearing; it was completely booked out within four hours of registrations opening!

“One of the most exciting things for a child is to be able meet an idol, and we are so lucky to have not only Emily van Egmond, but also the likes of Gema Simon, Sarina Bolden and Cassidy Davis right here in Newcastle.

“Greater Bank is so proud to be involved in clinics like this – the smiles and laughter said it all!”

Van Egmond will hit the pitch in Newcastle colours this Sunday for the final time this year when the Jets take on Western United at home at No.2 Sportsground.
