Spreading Christmas cheer among the community’s most vulnerable

For many, Christmas is a time to celebrate the festive season and enjoy the company of those closest them. For others less fortunate, it can be a lonely time of year.

That’s why, for 20 years, the Samaritans and its army of 250 volunteers come together to provide a wonderful Christmas Day experience for the homeless and others in our community who are struggling and would otherwise be on their own.

This year, the charity will host two big festive picnic lunches at Newcastle Foreshore and Singleton Showground to support more than 1000 people, complete with all the traditional Christmas trimmings - ham, chicken, salads, bonbon crackers, gifts for all, and of course, a visit from Santa Claus.

The annual events would not be possible without the generous support of our community, which this year includes Greater Bank.

Our $5000 donation will help the Samaritans create a “Picnic in the Park” experience to ensure those in attendance are appropriately distanced to meet COVID-safe requirements.

We’re also encouraging the people of the Hunter to support this wonderful event by making a donation to the Samaritans that will directly benefit those who need it most at Christmas.

Here’s what your donation can provide.

  • $25 can provide a gift for a child to open on Christmas morning or provide a meal to a guest at the luncheon.
  • $50 can feed a couple on Christmas Day.
  • $100 can feed a family of four on Christmas Day.
  • $150 can feed a family and provide gifts for the children.

We’re kicking this off with a further $625 to cover the cost of 25 meals. With your help, we want to raise an additional $5,000 to help make Christmas Day 2021 a special one for those who need it the most.
