Funding to provide greater community access to horse riding

Riding for the Disabled (NSW) Wauchope/Port Macquarie Centre can now upgrade saddles to provide greater access to a broader range of participants, thanks to funding secured through the #GreaterMidNorthCoast Community Funding Program.

Riding for the Disabled (NSW) Wauchope/Port Macquarie Centre has received $2,000 for winning the public vote in the November round, with Aussie Battlers (Port Macquarie) and Coffs Harbour Older Women's Network each receiving $500 as our monthly runners-up.

Riding for the Disabled Wauchope/Port Macquarie Centre Secretary, Cathy Wagstaffe, said the organisation provides horse-related activities to enrich the lives of people with a disability.

Riding for the Disabled enables our riders to be participants and not just observers, in a safe and fun environment,” Cathy said.

Horse riding can be a new experience which is invigorating and exciting, provide a feeling of independence and a sense of achievement, increasing self-confidence and self-esteem.

Riding involves all the muscles in the body, so sitting on a horse and looking down is a new experience for someone confined to a wheelchair

“Riding for the Disabled facilitates the partnership of a trusted friend with four safe legs, opening a whole new horizon for people with a disability.

“We rely on donations and grants for our funding, so this support from the Greater is most welcome as it will allow us to bring forward our equipment upgrades.”

Greater Bank’s Mid North Coast Regional Sales Manager, Jennifer Smith, said disability shouldn’t be a barrier to new opportunities.

“Riding for the Disabled has helped countless people with a disability to sit on a horse for the first time,” Jennifer said.

“Many love it and keep coming back, so we are delighted to help even more people enjoy this activity which can deliver so many personal benefits to the participants.”

The December round has a further $3,000 on offer for our nominees OneMob Radio, Port Writers Inc and Great Lakes Education Fund.

The public vote is open from 9.00am Monday November 28 until 5.00pm Wednesday December 14, 2022 at www.greater.com.au/greatermidnorthcoast
